A: stromata

Q: how near is too near a neighbours fence to plant bamboo and eucalyptus trees?

A: Actually, he's right about the bamboo...it's extrememly invasive. For your benefit and that of your neighbor, I'd advise a pretty deep barrier if you decide to go with that option. For bamboo, I would plant it at least the required 3 ft. As for Eucalyptus, simply because it can become a beautiful tree with large droopy branches, I would plant them at least 5-6 ft from the fence.

Q: Do Eucalyptus Plants loose a lot of water?
Please put Any information found in the Source boz so i can research more into it Thank you

A: Eucalyptus are all water seekers. That is they are rabid water takers from the surrounding environment. But to answer your question, "...lose a lot of water?" The way trees lose water is called transpiration - sweating. the hotter the weather the higher the transpiration rate. As a whole yes Eucalyptus are heavy sweaters, but at the same time are draught tolerant and therefore efficient water users when little is available. Do a Yahoo search on - transpiration rate of Eucalyptus

Q: I live in Az and my Eucalyptus kruseana planted in a pot is turning brown. What's wrong?

A: Even in Australia you rarely see Eucalypts grown in pots, they just seem to like a lot of space around their roots. As a native of my area I can tell you for certain it will need full sun and well drained soil with minimal fertilising and moisture (or none at all). Perhaps you have been too kind to it and over watered? It's hard to say. Eucalypts don't much like transplanting so, if you move it into another pot or into the ground and it dies. Don't feel bad! I would try a garden spot next time.

Q: Are Eucalyptus chips harmful to plants?
We recently trimmed a bunch of Eucalyptus trees that grow on our property and chipped them. Can we spread the chips to keep weeds down? They would go near some new citrus trees.

A: Red gum chips are a common mulch. Remember that mulch should not touch the trunk, especially in citrus trees as they develop collar rot which kills them.

Q: what to plant in a shady spot?
we have a north facing garden with a border by ahigh fence which I would really like plants in, there's a huge eucalyptus tree, a rose and a casteroil plant there already, so I need to fill the spaces in between- could someone give me suggestions please as a couple of trips to the local garden centre hasn't really left me inspired! Thank you.

A: I am blessed with a shady border :-( but there are lots of lovely plants for the area... Hosta (mentioned above), mecanopsis, Alchemilla mollis (lady's mantle), Lunaria annual 'Variegata', Euphorbia characias subsp. wulfennii, Ajuga reptans (colourful ground cover), Hedera helix 'Buttercup' (Ivy to climb up a fence), Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' (variegated grass), Brunnera 'Dawsons White' (foliage interest), Angelica archangelica (for height), Rogersia pinnata (nice flowers), Tiarella cordifolia. Most bulbs will do ok, and for annuals Busy Lizzies love the sun or shade. Good luck :-)

Q: freshen eucalyptus plants (dried)?
how do i make them smell again? do i have to throw them away and get new? someone told me if i boil the leaves my house will fill up with the smell? is that true? how do you clean them?

A: pour some eucalyptus essential oil over the leaves. Most health food shops stock essential oils or buy on line

Q: Is eucalyptus mulch bad for some plants?
I've read that it may kill Impatiens, is this true and are their other plants it might kill?

A: I think it might be a myth, but you could try an experiment just to be sure, by using it near a couple of plants but ot near some others, and then see what happens. All of the garden sites I visited say it's fine.

Q: Which plant do you think is more effective as an insect repellent? the eucalyptus or the basil?

A: Basil plants offer suffer insect infestation, so the plant alone is not the only solution. Usually the aromatic oils from plants will deter insects which don't like them, so you can spray an area, or use plants that emit tons of the oils. Tagetes are good for deterring white fly aphids, and garlic is really good for general aphid control. You can use Eucalyptus oils which will also work, though beware that many Eucalyptus will happily grow to 100' or more. Most can be cut back each year, and will re-sprout well. From your choice of Basil or Eucalyptus I'd choice the latter. Citronella also works well, and you can get Citronella plants, as well as the essential oils from it. I'd probably also plant some mint, as this is good, particularly with tomatoes. Overall, my best choice for deterrence is Garlic, mint, rosemary and Tagetes, Citronella and Neem oils are good too, though beware that many plants sold as Citronella are not the actual Citronella plant, but a Geranium family member, smelling similarly. Eucalyptus tea sprayed is also useful. Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob

A: Basil properties are reasonably limited. Eucalyptus, however, covers a wide range of healing and cleaning usefulness. Basil is easier to "process".
