Q: Can a healthy diet lower your immunities or immune system?
Around november of last year, i switched over from a disgusting junk food thriving, soda drinking, chain smoking living habit to a cleaner more exercise and healthy eating habit. Before i switched, i got sick maybe once a year. Ever since i changed things, I've caught several colds, and a very mild case of strep. Basically what i'm asking is can a healthier diet put you at risk for sickness or common viruses?

Q: What is a healthy diet for two baby red eared slider turtles?
i just figured out that my two baby turtles have metabolic bone disease and i need to know if what i am feeding them is right. what is a healthy diet for them?? i just got my turtles in july and they are not very old

A: http://www.flickr.com/photos/29035692@N03/sets/72157607029550534/ They need calcium from the bones from the fish they eat and they get protein from the fish bones. They need leafyu greens like Romaine lettuce,Kale squash,grapes,strawberries..google vehggioes with vitamin A and see what you have at home. You need to feed them feeder guppies, goldfish or minnows for protein and calcium daily drop 20 or so in the tanks and watch them disappear in a few days! When I got these two 36 yrs ago all we had in back then were goldfish to feed , so after 36 yrs and still going strong. They can eat goldfish! This way when they swim for their dinner they get exercise also! I also feed dried cubed blood worms or tubiflex worms at least 5 times a week. They sleep at the bottom of rivers, streams. lakes or ponds or your tank to avoid predators like coyotes, foxes, owls, hawks, possums, raccoons and even some wide mouth bass. ***TOSS in a bird cuttle bone in the water for calcium that will promot better shell growth, it will dissolve real slow and if they eat it that’s fine!! They can have garden worms, meal worms, snails, crickets, flies, crayfish small frogs, dragon flies and anything that moves, but only as a treat. These also have protein special garden worms! They need leafy greens Romaine, Butter lettuce. (Iceberg and cabbage are bad for them, any other leafy greens will do) for vitamin A that they need at least 3 to 4 times a week. You probably already know that they get sick easily, shell rot, respiratory sickness, lopsided swimming, coughing, blowing bubbles from their nose. Fungus white cotton patches on their skin? **Swollen cloudy eyes which means lacking in Vitamin A. Which we all need for good eyes. Google ‘vegetables with Vitamin A. Contact the “www.anapsid.org/societies, for a turtle vet / RESCUE in your city and state. May I suggest The bigger the environment the bigger the healthier the turtle. Remember 10 gallons for every inch of turtle. I have used kiddy pools and plastic pond liners from most nurseries and worked great. Did you know that they need to bask under a reptile light UVA/UVB for up to 8 hrs a day for the vitamin D that they need to grow. So that means getting a turtle dock also. Leave the heater on 75 to 78 degrees always. These turtles in captivity do not hibernate their eating may slow down some but they will not hibernate. These are not cuddly pets and will bite very very hard. Under 4" they carry a disease called 'salmonella'. So you must wash after every handling. Their water needs to be clean otherwise they get sick easily from dirty water cause they poop allot. You need a good filter system! Total Body length: 5-8" average for males, up to 12 inches max for females. Life span: 15-25+ years Males have the longer front nails and are used in mating. And are considered mature at about 5 yrs old. You can’t start sexing till about 3” across. Gravel larger than they can swallow. Email me if ya need help,K. You will save them. Just feed them some great foods and watch them grow. I wish you luck.

Q: Have you got a healthy diet schedule for me?
Ok, so if you have read my last 2 questions you will know i am trying to make it into a Professional wrestling career so have you got a diet that's healthy. Its mainly focused on building muscle, energy, good health and losing fat. So any schedules or advice would be greatly appreciated.

A: The first thing my son did when he got into wrestling was to get tons of grapefruit and every morning he drank a couple of cups of coffee and ate 1/2 grapefruit(eat a whole if they are small)with it. The caffeine is actually a fat burner and some acid in the grapefruit allows that caffeeine to burn more fat longer. In addition, my son ate a lot of salad and a lot of protein--for snacks it was fruits instead of cookies and goodies, and I have to say that it worked so well for him that I recently started a grapefruit regimen myself and it really works. This is what I do: 1 24oz cup of fat free or low fat yogurt 1-2 cups of coffee and 1/2 to 1 grapefruit in the morning--plenty of water in between. lunch: I only eat European Rye bread from Russia or Germany because it is not made with yeast and doesn't keep you hungry---I put butter and lunnchmeat on it or butter and preserves--whatever I like--2 of those slices and I am full. For snacks I usually have fresh fruit, whatever I got in the house. For supper I eat a lot of veggies and a lot of lean meat(chicken, turkey)--my son ate steaks as well. I try to avoid all starchy carbs in the evening. Sometimes I do eat fruit, but I have to say to my amazement that I do not even get so hungry that I want to snack a lot. I think it's the yogurt--it is shockful of protein, but also loaded with carbs which provide energy to the body. I hope this helps

Q: What is an effective but healthy diet for a busy teenager?
I'm 17 years old, 5 foot 4 inches tall, and 175 pounds. I'm really busy with school and extracurricular activities, but I think that it's time to make my health a priority. I understand that fitness/healthy living is a life style, and I'm not asking for a quick fix either. I just want to know: what is a good diet for me?

A: I think the best weight solution (especially for someone as busy as you!) is this; substitution. Before you reach for a bag of chips or hamburger try a Yoplait Yogurt instead. they are portable and delicious. Try granola, water or natural juice instead of soda, sandwiches instead of pizza. Excersice is great also if ytou have the time. Just whenever you eat something ask yourslef could I be eating something better? Also eat breakfast, it speeds the metabolism! Good luck and be patient!

Q: What is a good and healthy diet for a ballet dancer?
Say you have a 105 lb ballet dancer. 5 foot 3 She exercises 8 hours a week in ballet classes and then 4 hours or so in aerobics classes. How many calories approximately should she be taking in daily? What is a good diet for her in order to keep at a healthy weight?

A: depending on age, i would not worry too much about calorie intake. if there is a low calorie option, you can have it, but quantity is really the issue. don't think drinking a diet soda will help. if you want a soda, just drink the real thing because there isn't much of a difference (unless you're diabetic). you shouldn't really have more than one soda a day (about 6-7 teaspoons of sugar in a 12 oz can). drink a lot of water instead. most normal people don't drink enough water each day, and most dancers i know don't either (and they need far more than normal people). you should eat a fairly balanced diet (eat from all your food groups, lots of veggies, fruit, and dairy). women naturally have issues with retaining calcium and with bone density. women that are extremely active (especially dancers) have weaker bones than most and require more calcium than normal women to keep their bones healthy. so lots of milk (which has also been proven to help with weight loss) and a calcium supplement could help. if you have to have a big meal, make the biggest breakfast. eat lots of small healthy meals throughout the day. this helps to keep your stomach small, increase your metabolism, and burn calories faster. when eating protein, like meats, don't eat servings larger than the thickness and width of the palm of your hand. people don't actually need more than 3 of those servings of protein a day. if you need snacks between meals, eat something healthy like grapes or apple slices. if you visit fast food chains a lot, like burger king or mcdonalds, they both have very large salad options on their menus, as well as packaged apple slices. salads with cheese, a little dressing (thats where the calories are in salads), with some grilled chicken can make for a delicious meal, also very good for you if dark greens like spinach are used. if you read on the back of most foods, it says "based on a 2000 calorie diet" i'm not the healthiest person around (certainly not the healthiest eating dancer), and i don't even intake 2000 calories a day. i'm 5' 9" and weigh 127lbs. the last time i counted i took in about 1200 cal. and i'm actually under the recommended weight for my height. most people have a general idea about what is healthy, but just don't eat those things. if you are truly eating non greasy/fatty foods and are not eating loads of sugars, and eating the proper serving size of each food, everything should be fine.

Q: What are the basic components of a healthy diet?
My biology textbook says "You should know the basic components of a healthy diet" but fails to say what they actually are. Can you summarise it for me? I'm not looking for anything complicated, just something general. Thanks.

A: A balanced diet made up of Carbs, fats, proteins, vegetables etc... At least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day (Different fruits & veg) and not too many carbs. 8 Glasses of water a day - keeps your body working, also keeps skin nice :) Exercise always links into this somewhere... Hope this helps :) O, btw, remember Chocolate - this is essential! (my opinion)

Q: Why is it important for pregnant women to follow a healthy diet?
Why is it important for pregnant women to follow a healthy diet?

A: Normally diets are just to maintain your already-developed body. When you are pregnant, you are growing an entire body - brain, bones, heart, blood, liver and kidneys, muscles, etc - all from scratch, from one cell. Each of these body parts need certain vitamins and minerals, as well as basic nutrients. Bones are calcium; the redi in blood is iron; also, the majority of spinal development problems (i.s. spina bifida) are preventable with appropriate doses of folic acid. Proteins, fats and carbs are the basic building blocks the body uses to grow. All these nutrient have their uses. Shortages could lead to stunted or underdeveloped children. Fortunately in the modern world, even a bad diet has a lot of good nutrients. (Pizza has cheese and carbs and tomatoes. Hamburgers are actually real food.) An adult can tolerate or recover from a bad diet with vitamin and nutrient shortages - like the one month banana and grapefruit diet - much better than a rapidly developing fetus can. If the nutrients aren't there the first few weeks the brain starts developing, for example, it may be difficult to make up for lost time and the child may be permanently handicapped. As long as the baby gets a decent level and selection of nutrients, good diet - as in "eat your lean meat and organic vegetables, not ice cream and pickles" - doesn't really matter. One of the other things is that in the last few decades, due to the negative body image most women see from advertising, what's considered a good diet is too little. The starvation diet to keep yourself into a size 4 or 8 is nowhere near what is needed to grow an extra 10 or more pounds of fetus and placenta in months. Fortunately, women get wierd cravings to take care of that problem.

Q: Can you help me with planning a healthy diet?
I want to eat "right". However, I don't know what is healthy for sure and what is not. For example: apples appear to be good, but what about the sugar? Salad seems good, but what kind of dressing? Of course, these are only but a couple of questions I have. I need a healthy diet for sure because my family history is rather bad. I am 24 right now, a little overweight, so I am looking to "nip this in the bud" now and live a healthy and long life. Your help is very appreciated.

A: The best way to do so is to consult a nutritionist, who can tailor your diet to your needs.

Q: What is the definition of a healthy diet?
I have no clue what can be considered as a healthy diet.

A: A healthy diet consists of a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, low and non-fat dairy products. Saturated fats, trans fats, sugar, and alcohol are limited, and you can use spices as well. Drinking 8-10 glasses of water is also recommended. With the variety you get the most nutrients, and you can avoid boredom. The Mayo Clinic has an excellent website detailing different healthy diets that work with these principles. They also use the food pyramid developed by the US government... maybe it's the FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

Q: What should you eat for a healthy diet and for growth ? For breakfast lunch and dinner or for the 6 smal meals?
Ive been researching on what a 17 year old should eat for a healthy diet and all I ever get is that I should eat some fruits, carbohydrates, protein, saturated fat enriched foods etc. But they never say what exact foods I can eat in that meal, how much I should eat of which and what I can eat for growth. I never really know what to eat in the end :( so if anyone could answer me this question I would be really grateful =] thanks!

A: The reason no one every really says which foods to eat is that there are hundreds of choices in each food group. And since people's tastes are different, your choices may not be the same as others. The important thing is to get the right balance in all the food groups (meaning so much carbs, veggies, etc.). Below is a link to an article that outlines what calories teens should eat and how much (in terms of portion sizes) they should get from each food group. On this page there is also a link to the food pyramid which is a great source to learn more about each food group, etc. Hope this helps

Q: What is a healthy diet and exercise routine for a teenager?
I'm 13 years old and I don't do any exercise. I'm not fat, I'm just average. But I don't think I'm really that healthy so I want to know a healthy diet and exercise routine. I'm not really aiming to lose weight. I only take a walk around the neighborhood for 30~45 minutes. I just eat anything that I like. I'm not very obsessed with my weight I'm just trying to be healthy people!!!

A: Use exercises that use you own body weight (like push-up, pull ups, dips n such). If your going for a nice stomach, I've found combining leg lifts as you do a crunch is quite effective. As far as diet, stay away from high sugar intake. People become addicted to sugar and it starts in the early teens. Drink mostly water. Eat a healthy balance, and maybe talk to your parents about taking a multi-vitamin too. Cardio is important and when the motivation hits you go jogging. Start with 15mins and increase the time at your pace.

Q: Good food for a healthy diet?
I weigh 240lbs and I'm trying to lose 60lbs in the next twon months or so before my school starts again. Anyone know a healthy, inexpensive, really great tasting food to help me on this diet. I'm trying to completly change my lifestyle. Anyone got anything?

A: I would really try filling up on fresh fruit and vegetables... Light and fit yogurts are good and you can get a ton for a good price when they go on sale. And i personally swear by weight watchers bread products and lean cuisines(especially the pizzas).

Q: What foods would a healthy diet consist of?
I'm 20 years old, and 260 lbs :( . I'm working on figuring out an exercise routine, but I also realize I need to have a healthy diet. Should I be counting calories? If so, how many should I be having per day, if I want to lose weight? What vitamins should I be taking care to eat? What kind of foods might I find those in, and what's a good serving size? If you could give me some general pointers, as well as some actual examples, I would *really* appreciate it :D
