A: ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis)- In discrete trial training, every task given to the child consists of a request to perform a specific action, a response from the child, and a reaction from the therapist. It is not just about correcting behaviors but is designed to teach skills from basic ones such as sleeping and dressing, to more involved ones, such as social interaction. Discrete trial training is an intensive approach. Children usually work for 30 to 40 hours a week one-on-one with a trained professional. Tasks are broken down into short simple pieces, or trials. When a task has been successfully completed, a reward is offered, reinforcing the behavior or task. PECS (Picture Exchange Communication Systems)- helps children and adults with autism acquire functional communication skills. It uses ABA-based methods to teach children to exchange a picture for something they want - an item or activity. The advantage to PECS is that it is clear, intentional, and initiated by the child. The child hands you a picture, and his or her request is immediately understood. It also makes it easy for the child with autism to communicate with anyone - all they have to do is accept the picture. RDI (Relationship Development Intervention)- The primary goal of the RDIâ„¢ Program is to systematically teach the motivation for and skills of Experience Sharing interaction. The RDIâ„¢ Program provides a path for people on the Autism Spectrum to learn friendship, empathy and a love of sharing their world with others. Language comes alive when integrated with real emotion. People with Autism and Asperger's learn not only to tolerate, but to enjoy change, transition and going with the flow. It begins at the edge of each person's current capability and carefully teaches the skills needed for competence and fulfillment in a complex world.

Q: can anyone suggest any medication that may be helpful in the treatment of autism?
my 9year old daughter has truned very violent since returning to school after the summer holidays, she has now been excluded from school for bitting, she has very little speech so she cant tell whats wrong.we are at our wits end

A: There's a strange myth that children with autism are less emotional than other children I'm not quite sure where that myth comes from, but the truth seems to be that many people on the autism spectrum are MORE emotional, more sensitive, and more prone to tears. Sometimes, children are responding to intense sensory overloads. Sometimes they misinterpret words and body language and react with great passion. Sometimes they correctly interpret others and feel the pain of being different. Whatever the reasons, autistic children can respond to small things with tremendous intensity. Here is an article about how you can handle autism with a child. I wish you the best of luck! http://autism.about.com/od/childrenandautism/f/meltdowns.htm

A: My child (12 with Asp) receives PT/sensory, Sp, social skills, pragmatics, counseling and attends classes in drama. She also receives support for hearing issues and organizational strategies. But she's doing great! She has learned to ask,"please tell me what you WANT me to do, so I can do it." She can't always figure out expectations when they only tell her what NOT to do.

Q: Autism treatment expenses - tax deductible?
Hello, We live in California. My son is autistic and I am spending money for part of his treatment like appointments, classes, books, conferences, vidoes, medical evaluations, speech evaluations and other therapies. Can I claim these expenses as tax deduction when we file our annual taxes. I am saving the reciepts for all of them. Thanks

A: Yes, all of that can be deducted as medical expenses, if the expenses are related to your child's disability. For example, if he attends special classes designed to address his need, those are deductible as medical expenses. Don't forget to record mileage to all of these activities as well. Medical expenses are deductible for taxpayers who itemize and whose medical expenses are greater than 7.5% of the adjusted gross income.

Q: Tell me more about treatment for pathogens and toxins and what are generally used in the treatment of autism?

A: Autism treatment consists of treating digestion, then liver, then pathogens and toxins. They all have poor digestion, liver malfunctions, and too many pathogens and toxins. They commonly have lyme, Bartonella, yeast overgrowth, babesia, worms, virues (HHV-6, CMV, Epstein-Barr, borna, measles, etc.) and commonly their toxins are mercury, lead, aluminum, cadmium, and more. These are what is mentioned as being treated that is bringing recovery. One can learn about all this by googling, Yahoo Groups on autism, www.generationrescue.org, lymeinducedautism.com, autismresearchinstitute.com and there are many more places to learn and go. These places talk about recovery. My children no longer have autism. It's a beautiful thing, and I am spreading the word. It takes about 2 to 3 years to get recovered. My kids did it in a year, but I have more time than most. Some do not recover in 10 years of trying. When they shared with me what they tried, none had treated for bad bacteria, long-term, which I feel is the main thing to do. My kids are still dependent upon diet and supplements to keep symptoms away, but they have only been treated for pathogens for one year, and it takes about two to three on average.

Q: Does you know of any autism studies that deal only with the treatment of?
autism and not the often accompanying mental retardation. I'm looking for studies that address autism only and have excluded candidates that also suffer from mental retardation. Thanks.

A: Defeat Autism Now (DAN) is a very good research institute in the causes and cures for Autism. As a teacher of children with Autism I love to see parents and others taking steps to look for information on curing children with Autism but remember that techniques don't work for every child so keep looking. There is not a cure all yet but there are things that work for different children. The last website gives a lot of information also on curing autism also and the different strategies that are being used right now.

Q: Is autism curable and what is treatment used for it?
I know this is not curable, but want to make sure, but I need some treatments for this disease...

A: You can make it a lot better.I used to go to parents groups and stop going because so much negativism.I follow my own instints(after all Im the person who knows my child best)and Im doing everything that feels right for me.DAN protocol is a must if you really want to make a diference.Autism does not just affect the brain it also affects the inmunological system and the organs in the body(check april07 DISCOVERY MAGAZINE articule "Autism not just in the head" where this is explain)Lab test are done BEFORE to see if your child has high levels of toxic metals due to vaccinations and the enviroment they also check for yeast overgrowth(very common among kids in the spectrum)food allergies...so your DAN doctor can recomend probiotics, multivitamins, enzimes and Chelation (Im doing this with patch others do it with oils, oral and IV the last one I wont recomend on very young children. If you dont have a DAN doctor start by giving your child fish oil(very important:mercury-free..please!!)and remove casein from your kid diet.My son finally slept well after I removed the casein. The food your kid craves the most is usually what the allergic to.Your doc will recomend a CFGF Diet (casein-gluten free diet).Im taking CFGF diet to the next level by doing B.E.D diet which eliminates the yeast and allergies but you have to go slow and just if your child has this problem which i very common.Feed your child as natural as possible and organic avoid processed food, artificial sugars.I heard also about a diet call feingold or something like that.As for therapies is always better 1:1 and home-based if possible. There is Floor time,P.L.A.Y.,ABA,RDI and Autism Treatment Center of America Son-Rise Program.I chose son-rise for my son and started 3 months ago and he is making wonderful progress he starting to say his first words!! .There are kids who had fuly recovered from autism from all diferent programs and you can watch them at this website http://www.autism-recoveredchildren.com/ People will tell you bad things about every program according to their very subjective opinion as in my case just to find out that people like to talk without really knowing.Dont let them slow your search.I will recomend you to find out information by yourself about each program costs,scholarships,approach...etc..and remember is finding the program that fits best your child and not the otherway around.Every child is so diferent. There are many kids who had fully recovered other almost recovered the important thing is to help them reach their full potential wherever that one is for your child .So cheer up and hold your beautiful child's hand and guide him/her.You are his/her only streigth.Believe in your child potential. They are very perceptive show a positive actitud and he will trust you and will be more open to you and to this world.Don't let anyone dictate your child future or potential. And trust yourself.Wish you the best. For information on the treatments listed above and morego to this link: http://www.kylestreehouse.org/treatment_options.cfm
