Q: Where can I buy an autism awareness ribbon car magnet?
Where can I buy an autism awareness ribbon car magnet?
I want to buy one without the proceeds going to Autism Speaks. I dont mind the proceeds going to a different autism charity but not Autism speaks. does anyone know whwere i can buy one?
A: As someone else mentioned, if you google it, there are tons of places where you can purchase them. Some put part of proceeds to local charities, in which they would tell you on the website what charity(ies) it is. If you are interested in the Autism Society (they are the ones who designed the ribbon), you can purchase them from their main site at www.autism-society.org, or you can look for a local chapter of the Autism Society through their website (click on ASA chapters link), visit the local chapter website and purchase one through them so the proceeds go to that chapter. They are a much better organization than Autism Speaks, I too do not care for them.
Q: Did anyone know that it's Autism Awareness Month?
I know everyone knows its Breast Cancer Awareness month, but I was just wondering if anyone knew that it was Autism Awareness Month??
Thanks Ellie! I didn't know.
Must be different in Canada, it's Autism Awareness month here.
A: UH april is autism awareness MONTH, NOT this month
Q: Did you know that today is world Autism Awareness Day?
Did you know that today is world Autism Awareness Day?
Please use today to learn more about the Autistic Spectrum
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autism_spectrum
A: It was proposed and conceived by a couple, UN workers, parents of an autistic kid. They invited autism organizations to work together toward designation of an Autism Day at the UN.
Autism Speaks, however, hijacked the observance, and lies about being themselves the owners and creators of the day.

Q: With the increased awareness of Autism and related conditions;?
Will the Government ever take appropriate action to keep up with the need for better services and Education for these children and their families?
Momma: Under my rock, funding in my son's school is so limited that assistance is maxed out at 1 maybe 2 hours a week. We are not inundated with funding.
Autism is not curable. There is any real effective treatment. In Australia, smaller regions are not provided with large amounts of funding - any amount we get is a blessing but its very limited and the schools have to beg for it.
A: here in Australia it will take for a prime minister or other senior government minister to be personally touched by autism... or any condition before anything will be done...
the steiner education system does work well for children with autism but the geovernment minimised the funding to at least one steiner school I know of that had had lots of long term success with children and adolescents with lots of disabilities but especilly for those with autism....
the school closed down..
Q: Raising Autism Awareness?
I have a son who is Autistic and when I found out I received no information! I was left to research it on my own. I'm working with a local support group and want to raise money to donate to researchers AND to put together a packet of information for Doctor's offices to hand out to parents and to leave in waiting rooms and libraries. What is the best way to go about this?
A: I salute you for having taken upon yourself the noble task of doing what it takes for your dear son as well as others.
As Autism is relatively rare and a severe strain on the family open knowledge is difficult. No popular TV programs,no regular articles in common print media.
Thanks to the internet, you have many options to chose from these days. Even a little bit done by individuals counts for both themselves as well as for the society at large.
Please find some links to help you onwards in your noble task. You will find therein options which may not need duplication.
God bless you!
Q: I'm doing a presentation on Autism Awareness to a small audience, any suggestions?
I've done my share of research; what it is, possible causes, it's correlation w/ mercury in our atmosphere. But what would you guys suggest will catch people's attention? Thanks
A: You might consider looking at the positive side of Autism. This is not commonly done. Many famous people who have made great accomplishments are thought have Autism (Issac Newton, Albert Einstein, Leonardo Da Vinci, etc.)
You could start by saying, "What do Issac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Leonardo Da Vinci have in common?" (or any other three names that you find).
(However, it's not proven that these people had Autism, so you'll need to make that known in your presentation).
Here are some links with famous people:

A: YES .. very aware of Autism Awareness Month.
YES ... I am the Long Term Single Parent (FINALLY an Empty-Nesting Single Retiree) who raised HER TWO Children with Disabilities (including a child with Asperger's Syndrome -- High Functioning Autism) ALONE -- only responsible parent, only income.
It was definitely hard -- much harder than anything I could ever imagine -- and my child was very intelligent, creative, and yes, it was SO DIFFICULT to try to explain to others (and deal with the problems of nasty people who just did not understand the symptoms) what Autism Spectrum is.
I DID SACRIFICE everything -- my needs, my desires, anything at all that I was interested in or wanted to do to RAISE my children. I stood up and fought to have my children included in after school and community activities. I took and stood there while ignorant adults SCREAMED various nasty things at me because they did NOT understand. I was the one who rushed through and skipped meals so that I would make sure I could finish my Grocery or other shopping BEFORE I would pick up the children after school/care. I was the ONE who advocated for their special needs at their schools and everywhere else. I was the one who did EVERYTHING -- from Medical Care -- Appointments, etc -- and even had work-arounds in place when something 'happened' to cause the children to have 'difficulties' during the day.
I now CHERISH my ALONENESS -- for I certainly deserve to enjoy that time right now ... it was high time to CARE for the one FORGOTTEN -- ME ----
And that means a bit of pampering, to relax, to de-stress, and to let go (meaning ... that at my age (and I was an older parent when I had them both) I needed to start thinking in terms of the fact that I won't always be there in their lives ... so they needed to learn independent living skills as well).
Q: Autism Awareness Merchandise???
Does anyone know where I can buy Autism Awareness items like ribbons, pins, braclets, necklaces, keychains, magnets? I am from Ontario and in order for it to be affordable the items would have to be available in Canadian funds :)

Q: April is "Autism Awareness Month". How can we make more people aware of this condition?
http://www.autismspeaks.org/
Thank you for your answer, and have a wonderful day! :)

I'm not American, and don't support or have any kind of connection with these sites. My only intention with this question is to raise awareness about autism.
A: Seriously? I think you need celebrities -- those with close connections to a person with autism -- to champion the cause. There would need to be a series of advertisements and a large grocery store chain that was willing to push the envelope a little.
While poster children cause a sympathetic response, stories would be a better way of presenting the condition to people. (Maybe Reader's Digest and People Magazine could run some stories.) It would be nice to hear about the successes and needs of adults with autism. What are their stories? How can we help? After all, autism can be pretty much invisible to the casual observer, and in my experience children with autism are often very handsome people -- not the sort that garner sympathy.
Better advertising. Locally, there are a couple agencies that help adults with special needs of all sorts. There are often real paying jobs (ex: community outreach specialists) with those agencies for people who would like to support citizens with disabilities. And they aren't difficult jobs. They require having a clean record and being available to drive and spend time with a person with special needs. Yet these jobs are advertised quietly in the classifieds -- even though they are fun, well-paid jobs. It would be a real blessing to parents and caregivers to have more caring people available to fill these positions!
The best thing, Moon..., is probably to do just what you are doing. Talk about it. It's easy as a person needing help to wonder why it isn't available. Yet, it is the people dealing with autism who need to educate the public. From our little worlds, autism may be quite invisible, and we may have a pretty skewed understanding of what autism actually is.

Updated 4/06/07 -- (Smart Kat... gave some great information.) After reading the post below, I would like to add that although Autism does not necessarily mean mental retardation/learning disability/developmental disability, those with autism are (in my experience) served through mental health services agencies. It's important to know that there is a mental health component and that services are available through these agencies.
Q: Autism community what will you Be doing to spread awareness for autism awareness month (april)?

Then I always send out an automatic email message to my list subscribers every June 18th that states that June18th is "Autistic Pride Day". I am the only member of the Autistic Community that is on my Disabilities email list.
Q: Where did the puzzle piece for autism come from, and why do they use a puzzle piece?
I was driving today and seen an autism awareness sticker, a puzzle piece. I was wondering why a puzzle piece was used to represent it, and where did it originate?
A: The puzzle piece represents the piece of the brain that is missing so to speak.
