Q: How do you know when your gonna get an Asthma Attack?
I was wondering. Can an Asthma attack happen at any particular time? And when is the time an Asthma Attack can really come? .. When your playing sports(Basketball?)? And what can you do to prevent an asthma attack from coming?
A: I have asthma and I can tell that I am going to get an asthma attack if I am having trouble breathing and it isn't subsiding. The plus to that is that I use an inhaler which helps me breath :) Yes, asthma can happen at any time, it isn't a selective problem, but you have a greater chance of getting an ashma attack if your in an asthma inducing environment.
ashma inducment can be different for some people. There is exercise induced asthma which you mentioned (playing sports) umm, it can be triggered by things such as mold/pollen/dust/aroms/etc. I got an ashtma attack in the mall, becasue Sephora stunk so badly from perfumes and such. Also, people can get asthma attacks from stress as well. To avoid it, avoid the things which causes it, take medicine, use an inhaler.
Q: If you have a child with asthma, how did you recognize an asthma attack?
My 2 girls have asthma and I was recently diagnosed with it. I've read a lot about the symptoms and signs of asthma and asthma attacks, but I would like to hear first hand experiences.
My girls are 5 and 3, and I have albuterol for the nebulizer in case of an attack.
I have a baby monitor on all night to hear them.
A: i have asthma and so does one of my daughters. hers is not typical in that she doesn't wheeze, at least not that you can hear without a stethoscope. but she coughs and you can see her struggling to breathe. she'll have trouble talking normally because she has to take extra breaths.
to gauge how bad it is we sometimes have her sing the abcs on one breath. if she doesn't make it through, we pull out the inhaler....
for yourself, you'll just know. i always feel like i have a brick on my chest.
it's a pretty stressful thing. my daughter was really ill a lot until she got put on daily medications. best of luck for all of you.
Q: What are you supposed to do if you have an asthma attack?
Lately my asthma has been flaring up...I just had an asthma attack and can breath however I am still congested and coughing. Am I to call the doctor( this is my first real one)? thanks.
A: You should follow your asthma action plan. Obviously your asthma is worsening you need to step up your therapy. You should be taking a daily controller medication. If you are taking it, you either need to increase the dose or add another dose. You may need oral steroids for a short while. You probably should see an asthma specialist not just a GP.
Q: What should I do if someone had an asthma attack but they don't have their pump?
Let's say, we're in the country, enjoying a nice meal outside, one of my friends, suddenly has an asthma attack!
Somebody rushes to see if there's the pump inside his backpack. Oh no! We cannot find it anywhere! Someone tries to call emergency, but in rural area, cell phone coverage is void!
What should the gang do? Will our friend somewhat choke to death?
A: Find a paper bag of some sort and have them breathe in and out with it. Try to get them to relax until help arrives or you can get him moving enough to get to an emergency room.
Q: Asthma: What foods and Over the Counter products trigger or worsen an Asthma attack?
My sister said my recent near death attack was due to some dried apricots I ate 9 or 10 hours earlier. I had never heard this, but I am new to the Asthma wolrd. I love apricots and have not had breathing problems with them ever before. My Doc said it may have been the Alieve I took 3 hours prior. He didn't mention foods could be a trigger. Can they? What foods and Over the Counter products are suspect?
A: It all depends on what is the cause of your asthma!!
If apricots have never been a cause of your problem, they shouldn't be now! Try one or 2, but not a few pounds of them.
Some people are highly allergic to aleve and other items like it.
Listen more to your doctor than your sister!!
Q: Does mint flavored foods sometimes trigger an asthma attack?
Sometimes mint flavored candies or toothpaste can cause me to have an asthma attack. It doesn't work this way, but once in a while it messes with me.
Whenever I eat anything mint flavored, I have to remind my self not to accelerate or alter my breathing in any way, or else I can trigger an asthma attack.
For example, if I'm chewing mint flavored gum, and start laughing, my breathing can easily tighten up.
A: Mints can be aromatic and they also can have oils present. It is a plant source and as you know plants of all kinds can trigger allergic reactions that would put you at risk for an asthma attack.
The fact the foods will have different amounts and different compounding of the mint extract is why you get some inconsistent adverse effects. So I think you are probably right!
Q: When should you call 911 during an asthma attack?
I had a bad asthma attack last night - lasted a while. Started off by wheezing, then rapid breaths. Took my inhaler and waited, still kept wheezing. After a while, the wheezing started to get worse, breaths were quicker - started to hunch over and cough. Coughing didn't do anything to help though and I felt as if I was choking on nothing. My sisters wanted to call 911 but usually my attacks will slow down after a few puffs and a little bit of suffering. I just have to wait for it to calm down even though I get really scared. My sister also made me a cup of tea (b/c caffeine usually helps me) and she came over to me to try to help me calm down my breathing. It wasn't until I had the cup of tea that it started to slow down. Chest was really sore and I felt exhausted but the gasping and wheezing slowed down and eventually stopped.
B/c it slowed down after a number of inhaler puffs and a cup of tea, was it ok that we didn't call 911? When should you?
A: if that helps relieve the symptoms then it is ok.. you can still call 911 before you drink the tea just in case it doesnt work.. you dont have to go with them, you can sign a refusal... but severe asthma attacks can lead to hypoxia, and if not corrected that can lead to cardiac arrest....
Q: what is the likelihood of dying from an asthma attack?
i just found out (yes i know i probably should have figured out before) that athsma attacks can be fatal. is it just people with a certain type of asthma or can someone like me with anxiety and excersise induced asthma who only has about two to three attacks a month have a fatal attack?
what is an unconotrolled asthmatic?
I take albuterol when i have an attack should i be taking more?
A: Is your asthma inhaler buried at the bottom of your medicine cabinet? That could put you at jeopardy, say Canadian researchers, who are reporting today in the New England Journal of Medicine that using an asthma inhaler could reduce your chances of dying of an asthma attack.
But despite these important findings, asthma experts say many doctors and patients are still reluctant to use inhalers faithfully.

Q: How would someone give themself an asthma attack? I know that's bad; its for a bio quiz?
I know there are triggers for asthma for different people, but I am trying to explain how likely it is for people to have an attack with what combo of triggers, like is it that dust only once in a while gives people an attack, or if they were around dust and exercised, that would be sure to do it?
A: Air fresheners get me. AXE too. Dust isn't one of my triggers, though. Exercise definitely gets me going. Pretty much anything, but it depends on the triggers that a person has. In contrast to what the first person says, one thing can set a person off. Exercise alone obviously can; I've had it from the air fresheners and quite a few other things.
Q: I have asthma and my kids want me to go on rides at Canada's Wonderland. Is it possible to get an asthma attack
Is it possible to get an asthma attack during the ride or after-because I am so scared? If you are a doctor or nurse or asthmatic or relative/friend of an asthmatic etc. I would really appreciate knowing this. My Doctor is on vacation so I can't ask him.
EDIT Yes-I am terrified and I don't trust rides!
Thanks for the advice-I already take Flovent 250 and not the usual Flovent 125, also I take ventolin as well. It's been getting worse though.
A: Does stress always trigger your asthma? As a precaution and preventative use the inhaler before you go to the park. Carry the inhaler with you and use it if you feel an attack coming on. Quit stressing out and have a great time with your kids at the park!
Q: Do your lips ever tingle when you have an asthma attack?
Had a bad asthma attack last night - was wheezing and at times it felt like I was sort of choking. At one point, my lips started to tingle. This is the first time this ever happened to me.
Does that ever happen during an asthma attack?
A: AFTER THINKING ABOUT ALL OF MY PAST ASTHMA ATTACKS I WOULD HAVE TO SAY YES THAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE
aSTHMA SUCKS
