Q: Natural remedies for anxiety/depression and excessive worry?
I am suffering from post partum depression and the Percocet really makes me relax and feel like I have hope. I was given it for my c-section. I was wondering if there are any natural things I could take that could have a similar effect. Not anything bogus or fake, but something that actually helps with depression and anxiety. Something to make me relax. Any help is greatlyaappreciated I want to enjoy my little boy!

A: All I can suggest is St Johns Wort but you have to take it everyday for it to work and it doesn't even work on some people. But you can give it a try. Before you take anything though, I still recommend talking to your doctor about it if you're taking other medication.

Q: Natural remedies for anxiety disorders/panic attacks?
My 17 year old son has symptoms of anxiety. We know the things that can be done medically, but we're looking first at natural remedies. Does anyone know what aromatherapies work best? Vitamins/minerals/herbs? Music therapy? Other? Thanks! emigirl6---he's been to both his physician and he is currently in counseling. Thanks for the input!

A: There are many different counseling methods that incorporate behavior techniques to address stress and anxiety. Medication can be useful in some situations, but tranquilizes should never be a long term “cure” for stress. Natural cures for stress and anxiety include behavior management techniques, proper diet and exercise, herbal remedies and yoga techniques. These will actually work towards alleviating your stress.

Q: Has anyone tried or knows someone who is on Seredyn, the natural anxiety pill? It is the natural alternative?
to Paxil, Xanax, e.t.c. My question is, is it just as effective as the non-natural stuff (Paxil, Xanax, e.t.c.)? Thank you.

A: Here's what I found on the Seredyn site: SEREDYN is not a drug and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, or any other disease. SEREDYN should not be considered equivalent to or a replacement for FDA-approved medication. PS- If you are wanting to take something for anxiety, you should take Paxil. It basically has NO side-effects. And it is very safe. All it is is a SSRI (selective-serotonin re-uptake inhibitor). It affects the amount of serotonin that is passed between neurons in the brain.

Q: Does anyone have any good natural remedies for anxiety attacks?
I have taken prescriptions for anxiety before, and hated the side effects of going off of them. I currently have dizzy spells, lightheadedness, the typical symptoms. Is it possible I could be depressed? Any advice would be great. Thanks

A: I tried kava kava before, and it worked for me. Some have reservations about it, though.

Q: Do you know of any natural/herbal remedies for anxiety?
I was prescribed Effexor XR 75mg and took the product for six months. The medicine did control my anxiety, however it caused me to have no energy and gain forty pounds. So if anyone has tried a natural product please share the details with me!

A: Try over-the-counter Sam-E. Be careful if you are on the pill while using it - i think it has St. Johns Wort in it which can interact with the pill making it ineffective. Also, try some yoga - worked wonders for me

Q: A natural way to fight panic attacks/anxiety?
Does that omega3 fish oil work for anxiety/panic? I do breathing, and it helps, but I am wondering about any natural thing in a pill I could take. Tried Calms Forte, what a joke.

A: I'd recommend learning skills to help ride out the attacks rather than look to pills and drugs. You can only actively think about one thing at a time, so tools to help change a thought pattern, or action is better. Ask your doctor about programs like DBT, it's used to treat Borderline Personalty Disorder. You can't get more natural that changing a thought.

Q: What is the best natural relief for Anxiety especially when you feel a panic attack close to get over it?
Withdrawing from Xanax and do not have anything other than Tylenol PM in the house.

A: Lay flat on the floor or couch with your eyes closed. put one hand on your stomach put the other hand on your chest when you breathe in, make sure the hand on your chest goes up when you breathe out, make sure the hand on your chest goes down concentrate on your hand moving up and down, and concentrate on your heart rate decreasing as you breathe with your other hand. breathe slowly, and deeply. do this for 15 minutes and try not to fall asleep this is what i used to do for my anxiety attacks as a teenager. you'll never need xanax again. promise. let me know how it works out for you!

Q: Anyone know any good natural antidepressants-anti anxiety herbs?
I suffered from post-partum depression with both of my daughters, I have been completely off any prescription antidepressants for a little over a month and I feel that I still have the depression (mostly anxiety) a bit, but can't bear the though of going back on prescription meds because I can't handle the side effect and don't want to go through that withdrawal again, any advice? I eat healthy and exercise 5 days a week. Exercise does help a lot.

A: You don't say how old your daughters are, or if they are babies still, but any natural remedy you would use would affect you if you are nursing. So make sure your doctor knows about anything you would be taking since natural remedies can affect breast milk as well as the potency of other medications. "Natural" doesn't always mean 'better." It's up to us to be informed patients. Dong Quai is a natural hormone that helps our hormone levels as women, which can cause depression. St. John's Wort is wonderful for MILD depression. The doses you'd take would depend on the absorbtion levels of your body. Kava is an herb used by the Pacific Islanders for depression. Ginkgo Biloba can work wonders for a lot of people with depression. Omega 3 fatty acids for some people who have depression have responded to this. And it can't hurt your overall health to take it! A friend of mine swears by this for her PMS. The Bach company, at most health food stores, like Whole Foods, carries a line of "flower essences" liquid that are amazing for the conditions that depression causes... hopelessness use Gorse despair use Sweet Chestnut inner anguish use Agrimony Rescue Remedy by Bach is another all purpose remedy that works for every type of emotional problem. I use it myself all the time to calm my nerves. I think you should try a natural medicine practioner. They can do wonders with combinations of herbal remedies that are just right for you. Sometimes when we "self-dose" we don't always get it right... that being said, I hope you find the help that you need for your depression. It's a tough condition to battle. Good health to you...
